Voice of Truth

John 8:31-32

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ ”
****************************

By Jesus saying to us that “the truth will set you free”, we must think about the question, “free from what?”  If truth is the thing which frees us, then it must be lies which are the things that bind us.

What kind of lies do we hear every day?

“You’re a failure.”
“You’re worthless.”
“You aren’t good enough.”
“You can’t do it.”

I’ll lean once again on a great song; “Voice of Truth” by Casting Crowns:

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a Sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand
But the giant's calling out my name and he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times I've tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again "boy, you'll never win!
"You'll never win"
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
And the voice of truth says "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Which voice will you listen to today?  The one which binds you up and keeps you a prisoner, or the one which sets you free?

Heavenly Father,
With all the things of this world which tell me every day that I should want more, have more money, look better, dress nicer…it is easy for me to listen to the wrong voices.
But You, Lord, tell me every time I am willing to listen, that I am worthy to be called Your son and be an heir to Your kingdom.
Give me the strength to listen to Your voice, the voice of truth and not the voice of lies, so I can be free in You.
In the name of the One who set me free, I pray,
Amen.
