Thirst No More

John 4:13-15

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’  The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.’ ”

There is a great song on Christian radio by a group I’ve discovered recently called the Rhett Walker Band.  Their song “Come To The River” was playing tonight on my way home from serving at the jail.  And although I love the tune and the way the music builds through the song, I had not listened super-close to the lyrics.  I highly recommend spending the dollar or so on iTunes to check it out.

“My thirst for myself left me wanting more
Till I found myself face down on Your shore”

How many times in our lives has the pursuit of what we want, what we think will fill us up has caused us to fall down?

“My restless heart, led me astray
To my selfish pride I became my own slave.
But you placed a thirst in me with no drink in sight
'Cause I could not see till I saw through your eyes”

The thirst in our souls long to be quenched.  We try and satiate it ourselves through seeking things of this world; power, money, fame, drugs, sex, alcohol, pride…

“You say, come to the river
Oh, and lay yourself down and let your heart be found.
You say come to the river
Drink from the cup I pour and thirst no more”

We can drink from the cup Jesus offers to us, full of the Living Water.  We don’t have to be thirsty…

Lord God,
I can search all day, all night, all my life...pursue all things, seek to be filled.  But there is only one thing that can truly fill me up.
You sent your Son to me.  He offers me the cool, clear and refreshing water of life.
I thirst…He came…He offers…I drink…I thirst no more.
Thank you Abba…my Father,
Amen.
